In their efforts to protect the Lagos state from flood, lawmakers at the Lagos Assembly have called on Governor Babajide Sonwo-Olu to direct Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources to ensure that drainages are cleared of silt and refuse.
This followed a motion moved by Hon. Desmond Elliot under matter of urgent public importance.
Desmond said that flood and threat of ocean surge is a problem that must be tackled urgently. He explained that flood is due to poor drainage system.
He remarked that United Nations Organization has revealed that 90% of erosion has been caused by flood. Desmond remarked that flood is a natural disaster and can be avoided.
He prayed the House to call on the Governor Sonwo-Olu to direct Commissioner for Environment and Water to ensure clearing of Canal and drainages.
He added that the environmental agency should intensify campaign prohibiting dumping of refuse into drainages while at the same time appealing to residents to desist from dumping refuse in drainages.
Hon. Jude Idimogu said” we need to drain the canal because it is linked to the sea and lagoon.
Also, Hon Abiodun Tobun attributed flood to negligence of government.
He said that drainages have been neglected and people dump refuse in drains. He emphasized that government should drain canals. He said reclaimed water found sources, therefore causing flood.
